"I can. I'm going to make love to you till neither of us can walk. Take off your gown, Cat."
"You're crazy if you think "
"Take off your clothes, or I'll take them off for you and I won't be particular about buttons and seams."
Flames of fury licked at her blood as she glared at him, yet she read the determination in his eyes; the time for reckoning had come. He was going to have her. She could resist him with all her might, but in the end she would be no match for Jake's persuasion.
"Go ahead and fight me, hellcat," he drawled as if he'd read her mind, grinning with a slow laziness. "A good tussle only makes me hotter."
The husky declaration should have been crude, offensive, yet instead it was erotic, sensual, stroking her senses. Caitlin quivered, feeling her body already beginning to throb and come alive for him.
Just once more, a forbidden voice whispered in her mind as she gazed helplessly at him. Just once more let me lie with him, let me feel him deep inside me, completing me.
"Damn you, Jake.... You're determined to ruin me, aren't you?"
"That's the last thing I want."
"This is a fine way to show it! It was bad enough at the dance, you dragging me into the woods when anyone might see. If anyone but Vernon had found us together
"
"Don't," Jake interrupted sharply. "Don't mention his name. I don't want to hear it.
Not tonight."
In the ragged silence that followed, Caitlin took a steadying breath, knowing she had to keep a rational tone if she meant to reason with him. "Jake ... the scandal...
You'll destroy my reputation."
That stopped him for an instant. "Nobody will know but us."
"I'll know. I won't behave like a wanton with you again. I won't. You can't make me."
Jake hesitated at the distress in her voice. He didn't want to hurt her. He only wanted to make Caitlin see they belonged together. To make her forget the man who'd been her husband. Make her see that her greenhorn schoolteacher couldn't give her anything like what they'd once shared. He wanted to hold her, to touch her, to draw her close and turn her blood to fire....
Needing to touch her, he stepped closer, his eyes blazing with a fiery, restless need she could see. Caitlin took an evasive step backward.
"Jake ... please... if a tussle in bed is all you want, you can get it in any saloon.
You don't need me."
